Disappointing Spring Council Conclusions for Social Europe

[25/03/2008]

The annual Spring European Summit took place in Brussels on 13-14 March gathering together European leaders under the Slovenian Presidency to discuss the current and future prospects for the EU economy. During this meeting, the third cycle of the Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs covering the period 2008-2010 was launched.

Although European leaders recognised the need to shift away from the pure focus on economic growth and jobs creation, the emphasis of the Strategy that was adopted during the meeting fails to address the lack of a social dimension in the Lisbon Strategy. SOLIDAR believes that the only way for the Jobs and Growth agenda to fulfill its objectives is to include the Social Inclusion dimension fully into the Strategy, making citizens once again the centre of European policy-making.
