EU Transparency Register Faces Sharp Criticism [29/06/2012]
The pro-transparency group Alter-EU exposed the shortcomings of the voluntary European transparency register in a report launchedon Monday (25 June). This register created by the European Commission and the European Parliament was established to increase transparency on the lobbying activities in Brussels. However some companies in the pharmaceutical, nuclear energy, financial sector, agri-business, as well as some Brussels-based think tanks, are still refusing to give insights into their activities.
The evidence presented by Alter-EU showed that 120 of the world's largest companies, who are also actively lobbying in Brussels, boycotted the register. This includes big corporate names like Apple Inc, Disney, Times Warner, Rio Tinto, and Monsanto as well as many Brussels-based consultancy groups and law firms. One very striking outcome of this report is that over 60 per cent of companies lobbying for the Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) did not register. The European Commission announced a review of the register next year.
