[13/07/2012]

On Monday, 75 civil society organisations (CSOs) and trade unions from the Western Balkans sent out a statement to the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee welcoming proposals intending to strengthen the social dimension of the Enlargement process put forward by MEP Kristian Vigenin in the draft report on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA II) and by MEP Maria Eleni Koppa's in the draft report on "Enlargement: policies, criteria and the EU's strategic interests".

In particular, civil society organisations (CSOs) and trade unions from the Western Balkans support the following proposals:
- To strengthen the capacities of civil society to act as strategic partners at all stages of the assistance cycle, including the initiation, development, implementation and monitoring of programmes.
- To stre ngthen the capacities of social partners and to improve the social dialogue itself in order to promote decent work and quality.
- To specifically address the issues of a growing informal sector, high unemployment and integration in order to combat further social exclusion of those most at risk of poverty and vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons.
- To promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in the region, in line with the Europe 2020 Strategy, to achieve sustainable economic recovery.
- To strengthen the implementation of social reforms and the provisions in the EU "Social Acquis" embracing the "more-for-more" principle.
