Regulate Global Finance Now! [21/09/2009]
At a time when the global financial crisis is affecting every aspect of our lives, threatening jobs, savings, pensions and public services everywhere, SOLIDAR was present at the launch of a new campaign to regulate global finance led by the Global Progressive Forum. The campaign aims is to activate citizens to call on decision makers and governments to regulate the financial markets.
Conny Reuter, Secretary General of SOLIDAR, sat on a panel including Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Co-Chair of the Global Progressive Forum and John Monks, General Secretary of the ETUC, and emphasised the social consequences of the crisis saying that "when we say that unemployment is increasing, what we are actually saying is that social exclusion is increasing. With 72 million people living at risk of poverty in the EU, and this number is only predicted to increase next year, how can bankers still get these colossal bonuses?" He continued "that is why SOLIDAR is involved in this campaign, as we need stronger regulation of the financial markets."
