Listening to the progressive Mediterranean [24/06/2011]
At the beginning of the week, SOLIDAR was invited by the S&D Group to participate in a conference on “A renewed social-democracy to face Europe’s challenges”. In the frame of this conference, the Global Progressive Forum, FEPS, Fundació Rafael Campalans and SOLIDAR hosted a meeting entitled “Listening to the progressive Mediterranean”.
Progressives from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain and Palestine spoke about their hopes and fears. The transformation to democracy and freedom has not yet been achieved. Progressives need support to build up a Democratic Party system and set the frame for a real democratic society as the forces who carried the former regimes in Tunisia and Egypt are still present and have influence and power.
As progressive Europeans, we underlined that it is not about telling them how to do things, but about listening, learning and understanding in order to develop a common cross Mediterranean strategy (“Zone d’échanges justes”) which accompanies the development towards democracy and concrete support and capacity building.
