Danish border controls: Concerns about of cross-border crime as excuse for political trade-off with far right

[8/07/2011]

On 4 July Denmark reintroduced random border and customs controls on its Swedish and German border crossings. Officially, this is a measure against growing cross-border crime. In reality, this is a move by the minority government to secure support from the far right Danish People's Party for the recent pension reform and for the upcoming general elections in November.

SOLIDAR calls on the EU Institutions to take firm action on this matter as this undermines the principle of freedom of movement within Europe and the foundation of the Schengen Acquis - both fundamental for an integrated Europe.
