Migration

Making Migration Work for Development

NAME OF PROJECT: Making Migration Work for Development

PROJECT PARTNERS: The project involves 7 SOLIDAR member organisations in Belgium (Pour la Solidarité), Czech Republic (Czech Council on Foreign Relations), France (Solidarité Laïque), Italy (ISCOS-CISL and PROSVIL), Romania (ADO SAH ROM), Spain (ISCOD) and will be delivered in close collaboration with SOLIDAR’s Global Network partners.

PERIOD: January 2010 - December 2012

MAIN AIM: Even before the economic crisis exploded, half of the world’s workforce was living on less than 2USD per day. 80% of the world population was lacking social security coverage and informal employment was spreading. Deficits in decent work and aspirations for a decent life are part of the driving forces of international migration, with 90% of the world’s migrants (estimated at 191 million in 2005) being workers and their families in search of employment.

This project, funded by the European Commission's AIDCO in cooperation with the Global Progressive Forum, aims to mobilise support from European citizens and politicians for a rights-based-approach to labour migration and decent work (in line with the relevant UN and ILO conventions) and for policy coherence for development.

Furthermore, it aims to:
  • Demonstrate that deficits in Decent Work are part of the driving forces in cross-border migration (migration out of necessity).
  • Mobilise European citizens' support for ensuring that Decent Work is put at the centre of development cooepration policies as a condition to give people in developing countries the choice to live in or leave their countries (migration out of choice).
  • Engage citizens in advocation for a rights-based approach to labour migration and for policy coherence for development.
  • Reinforce the capacity of national and European actors to develop joint national and European advocacy and awareness-raising intiatives to ensure that Decent Work is the outcome of international, European and national policy and instruments in the areas of migration and development cooperation in close partnership with southern organisations.
