Social/Active Inclusion
SOLIDAR is working on addressing the problems of social/active inclusion and anti-discrimination, arguing for efforts to be reinforced at European level and for greater recognition of the role of NGOs in combating these issues.
What is social inclusion?
Social inclusion is about combating poverty and social exclusion so that everyone can participate in society. NGOs, like SOLIDAR members, run institutions and provide services and support addressing a broad range of social risks linked to poverty, vulnerability and discrimination.
Active inclusion goes hand-in-hand with social inclusion as one strand of the broader social inclusion concept which deals with the integration into society of people furthest from the labour market.

Meet Antoinette
Antoinette is 15 years old and comes from a middle-class family in Brussels. When she was 13, she started having losing friends at school which upset her alot. So one morning instead of going to school, she decided to go to the seaside. She contined to do this day after day adn refused to go back to school. After the problem became obvious, Antoinette was referred to the School Drop-out Prevention team.
She really liked the team and found it better to go to see them than hanging about all day in town or at the sea. Through her work with the team Antoinette now feels ready to return to school. |
What we do
SOLIDAR has been strongly involved in monitoring and contributing to the European-level process on active inclusion. SOLIDAR replied to the consultations in 2007 and 2008. Together with the Social Platform members, SOLIDAR successfully lobbied for the adoption of a Commission recommendation on Active Inclusion. SOLIDAR contributed to the own-initiative European Parliament Report on Active Inclusion adopted in May 2009.
What we want
SOLIDAR wants the European institutions to implement the Commission's Recommendation on Active Inclusion and that they promote active labour market policies that address inequalities and strongly involve social partners.
You can read more about our recommendations in our briefing on the topic...
